Canadian Virtual University

The Canadian Virtual University is a partnership of Canadian universities that have combined their resources and distance education offerings to provide students with more options for degree credit courses, programs, and degrees. Choose from a wide range of CVU courses and apply these courses towards the programs at member universities.


Athabasca University

Athabasca University offers undergraduate and graduate courses in several different delivery modes and formats: individualized study, grouped study (classroom seminar), teleconference, television-assisted (telecourses), computer mediated conferencing, individualized-study online, and online-enhanced. Courses are offered in health administration and nursing.

University of Alberta

The University of Alberta offers a Master of Nursing program and PhD in Nursing program. Full-time or part-time study options are available.

University of Calgary

The University of Calgary offers a range of undergraduate programs including: a Bachelor of Nursing Accelerated Track (BNAT) program for students with a previous baccalaureate or higher degree; the Bachelor of Nursing Regular Track (BNRT) four year program; a collaborative BN offsite program with Medicine Hat College; a joint BN/B Kinesiology program; an On-Line Post Diploma Bachelor of Nursing (PDBN); a Post-Masters Nurse Practitioner Diploma; a Master of Nursing (MN), course-based or thesis-based, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. It also offers Post Degree Continuous Learning (PDCL) initiatives, one at the post-Master’s level (Nurse Practitioner), and one pending at the post-baccalaureate level (Family Systems Nursing).

University of Lethbridge

The University of Lethbridge offers two programs leading to the Bachelor of Nursing degree. The NESA (Nursing Education in Southwestern Alberta) program in collaboration with Lethbridge Community College is a generic program for students new to the discipline. The Post-Diploma program is for individuals already licensed as Registered Nurses.

British Columbia

British Columbia Institute of Technology

The British Columbia Institute of Technology offers a Health Care Management Certificate by distance; Canada’s first competency-based undergraduate management degree – the Bachelor of Technology in Management Health Specialty Option;full-time and some part-time nursing courses; nephrology nursing advanced specialty certificate.

TRU Open Learning (TRU-OL) University

The TRU Open Learning (TRU-OL) University has several web based courses offered in management/leadership skills.

Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University offers an MSc in Population and Public Health. This program focuses on population and public health,policy and planning for health care delivery, health promotion and disease prevention. It is designed to prepare established professionals and recent university graduates for positions of leadership in health research and in the health professions.

University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia Basic Baccalaureate program offers two entry options that lead to a BSN degree (from Senior Secondary School or previous bachelor degrees); Post-Basic Baccalaureate Program – Registered nurses may complete the entire UBC RN to BSN Program through distance education,engaged in full or part-time studies; Master of Science; Nurse Practitioner Program (a two year full-time Family Nurse Practitioner program at the Masters level);Certificate in Practice Education for Health and Human Services.

University of Victoria

The University of Victoria offers a variety of CE courses in Education and Health Sciences.


University of Manitoba

In addition to the Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing programs, the University of Manitoba currently offers an Advanced Practice Nursing major (Nurse Practitioner). This major is achieved through a course-based, non-thesis program of study comprised of 39 credit hours over two years (20 months). CE Certificate and Diploma Programs are available in Health and Social Services,management, and education.

University of Winnipeg

The Division of Continuing Education at the University of Winnipeg offers relevant workplace development of specific skills through Professional Edge Seminars. The topics offered are available to the public as well as to Professional Studies program participants. There is a required component of 35 hours of seminars for completion of Professional Studies Program certificates and diplomas. Seminars are 7 – 14 hours each.

New Brunswick

Humber College

The University of New Brunswick four-year Bachelor of Nursing (Basic) program is also offered at Humber College in Toronto. The first two years of the regular BN program are condensed for the Advanced Standing Program students (individuals with university education )who then integrate with the BN students in the third year of the regular program. The Master of Nursing (MN) Program has two MN program streams: Advanced Practice and Nurse Practitioner. The Nurse Practitioner stream is available for part-time study and by distance (sites will be determined by demand and resources).Continuing education courses in Professional Nursing Practice in Nursing Homes, Nursing and Nurses Images in the Media, and Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Practice are also available.


Memorial University

Memorial University School of Nursing offers its BN Post RN Program entirely by distance education .Admission to the MN program and Post Masters Nurse Practitioner Diploma program requires a baccalaureate degree in nursing (or equivalent) from a recognized institution. Distance Education is offered through the MUN@Home program giving you the option of taking university credit courses wherever you are,whenever you want.

Nova Scotia

Dalhousie University

The Dalhousie University School of Nursing offers aBScN (Arctic Nursing) program, a post-baccalaureate primary health care nurse practitioner program, a master of nursing(MN) program, a joint master of nursing and health services administration (MN/MHSA) and a PhD (Nursing) program. The Post-RN Stream is a 78-credit-hour degree option for diploma-educated nurses. Post RN students are able to study on a full-time or part-time basis either on-site or through distance education using audio teleconference and Web-CT (a computer-mediated distance education method). The 36 credit Master of Nursing Program, which is available onsite and via distance, offers three program streams including thesis, advanced practice, and policy practicum options. A wide variety of CE courses is also offered.

Mount Saint Vincent University

Mount Saint Vincent University offers Graduate Programs in Family Studies, Gerontology, and Education.

St. Francis Xavier University

St. Francis Xavier University offers a post RN BScN Degree that allows students to customize their program, and select nursing electives in areas that will support individualized needs and interests, and professional nursing practices. The curriculum for specialty certificates is derived from the Part-time Post RN BScN program. All courses taken as components of a certificate program or as an individual special interest course are fully transferable into the degree program. It also offers a certificate program in Gerontological Nursing and a certificate in Continuing Care, and specialty nursing courses in Palliative Care Nursing, Challenges in Aging: Implications for Nursing, and Computers in Nursing. The Master of Adult Education has a professional development focus and is a self-directed, distance learning program wherein students design, implement, and evaluate their own content curriculum.

The University of St. Mary’s

The University of St. Mary’s Certificate in Leadership Development will help you develop your leadership skills. The Certificate in Leading Innovation provides you with a comprehensive set of tools to design, lead, facilitate and implement effective change and innovation in your workplace. This certificate program is a hands-on, skills development program designed to provide you with the skills to become an effective change agent in your organization. Other courses/workshops are available include: High Impact Presentation Skills, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Team Building and Group Dynamics, Managing Workplace Conflict, Effective Negotiating and Influencing Skills, Transformational Leadership, Goal setting, planning, & decision making.

Prince Edward Island

University of Prince Edward Island

The University of Prince Edward Island offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as many leadership Certificate Programs including: Administrative Professional’s Development Program, Advanced Certificate in Communications, Advanced Certificate in Leadership, Certificate in Leadership, Communications, Supervisory Development, Practical Management, Conflict Resolution Studies, and a Management Skills Program.


McGill University

McGill University offers a B.N. Program for the Registered Nurse with a CEGEP diploma or the equivalent; aB.Sc.(N.) program for those graduating with a high school diploma from outside of Quebec, graduating with a CEGEP diploma in sciences or enrolled in a university program. It also offers a M.Sc.(A.) Nurse Bachelor’s Entry Program for licensed Nurses with a B.N. or a B.Sc.(N.) and a M.Sc.(A.) Direct-Entry Program for those with a general university degree in Arts or Science and have no previous degree in health sciences academic preparation as a health professional. ItsPh.D. Program is available for a licensed nurse with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and interested infest-tracking to doctoral studies. McGill offers a Certificate in Health and Social Service Management designed to provide an integrated base of management knowledge for those who have an interest in the organization, functioning and management of departments in hospitals (general, for long-term care, etc.),reception centres for the youth and elderly, local community centres and other health and social establishments. It will focus on the development of skills in the day to day management of the provision of services in terms of both efficiency and human criteria.


University of Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan offers four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as well as course-based or thesis options leading to the Master of Nursing degree. CE courses in Gerontology and Perinatal nursing are also offered.


Brock University

Brock University’s Master’s program in Applied Health Sciences offers students a unique educational experience which combines mentorship of the student by a faculty supervisor and extensive small group work with fellow students from each of the five academic departments represented in the program: Community Health Sciences, Nursing, Physical Education and Kinesiology,Recreation and Leisure Studies and Sport Management. The Master of Education(MEd) degree program at Brock University is designed to improve the professional competence of practitioners and researchers and is also offered off-site.

Lakehead University

Lakehead University’s School of Nursing currently offers a four year BScN program, a three year compressed BScN program, a two year BScN program for diploma prepared Registered Nurses, a Nurse Practitioner Program, a Masters in Public Health with a Specialization in Nursing, and a Native Nurses Entry Program. Some of the programs are even offered through distance delivery modes.

Laurentian University

Laurentian University offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (4-year) designed for generic students; Bachelor of Science in Nursing -Registered Nurse Program designed for post-RN students; Bachelor of Science in Nursing – Post-RN Distance Education Program designed for post-RN students; Nurse Practitioner Certificate (30 credits required) designed for degree prepared RNs; concurrent Nurse Practitioner Certificate and B.Sc.N. designed for diploma prepared RNs. It also offers a Cardiac Care on the Web, a program in cardiac nursing offered as 12 courses of study. Each course is equivalent to one credit. The program is designed for all registered nurses who wish to develop their knowledge in the specific area of cardiac care. The Master of Science in Nursing (MScN)program produces graduates who have knowledge, values, attitudes and competencies reflecting the philosophy, nature and scope of nursing in northern, rural and remote areas. Nursing electives include: Gerontological Nursing, Cardiovascular Nursing, Occupational and Environmental Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Leadership and Management in Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Health Promotion, Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology, and Health Policy.

McMaster University

McMaster University offers BScN Basic (A) Stream or BScN Post RN Post Diploma (B) Stream. The Graduate Program in Nursing, established in 1994, leads to an MSc by thesis, an MSc by course work, or a PhD by thesis.A Graduate Diploma in Advanced Neonatal Nursing is available to MSc students and MSc prepared neonatal nurses. The following are offered through Distance Education : Nursing and Health Care Leadership/ Management Program, Nursing Conflict Management in Health Care Organizations, Nursing Leading Effective Teams in Health Care Organizations, Decentralized Budgeting, and Total Quality Management/Quality Assurance.

Nipissing University / Canadore College

A 4 year collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing is offered by Nipissing University and Canadore College.

Queen’s University

This four year B.N.Sc. program is offered by the nursing school of Queen’s University. As well, a Master of Science (Nursing) is offered. The Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate is for students with baccalaureate preparation in nursing.

Ryerson University

Ryerson University offers a four-year, full-time program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Post RN Degree Program: 2 years of study for registered nurses beyond a diploma program in nursing; a new graduate program leading to an MN in Nursing with courses offered through Distance Education. As well, Ryerson offers a variety of courses through their school of continuing education in Gerontology, Health Services Management, Training and Development, and Nursing.

Trent University/Sir Sandford Fleming College

The Trent University/Sir Sandford Fleming College Nursing program is an integrated, collaborative four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.) Degree. Courses in the program are delivered on both sites throughout the four years.

University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa, in collaboration with Algonquin College and La Citécollégiale, offers a collaborative Bachelor ofScience in Nursing degree, in English and in French. The post-RN program offered by the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing takes outstanding practitioners and prepares them for leadership roles in health care practice, education and research. The Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program is offered at ten universities across Ontario. Depending on the university, the program is offered part-time, full-time; French, English; at the post baccalaureate certificate level.. The Masters in Nursing Program offers two areas of concentration: primary health care and tertiary health care.Some courses are offered by distance modalities.

University of Toronto

The graduate unit at the University of Toronto offers the following field(s): Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (M.N.);Clinical Nursing (M.N.), Nursing Administration (M.N.), Nursing Science, Nursing Science of Healthy Individuals, Families and Communities (M.Sc./Ph.D.), Nursing Science of Individuals and Families with Acute and Chronic Illness (Ph.D./M.Sc.), Science of Nursing Administration (M.Sc./Ph.D.) A full-time 2-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is also open to students who have already completed 2 years of university.

University of Waterloo

Waterloo University‘s Health Studies and Gerontology offered in both the co-operative and regular systems of study.Co-operative education is a model that integrates academic studies with relevant work experience. Students may choose to specialize in a particular area of the health field such as, gerontology, health promotion, health administration, or environmental health.

York University

York University offers a collaborative BScN for individuals with no previous nursing experience. Offered jointly with Seneca College or Georgian College – the first two years of the program will be completed at the college location of your choice; the final two years at York’s Keele campus. It also offers a Post-RN Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This is a part-time evening program only available to Registered Nurses. You can apply to enter in September, January or May. York is offering a brand new BScN program specifically designed for internationally educated nurses. York also offers a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate. This certificate can be taken on a full- or part-time basis by Registered Nurses who already hold a degree in Nursing. A Masters of Science in Nursing (online and hybrid course delivery) is also offered as of May 2005.

Centennial College

Centennial College offers a certificate program in Nursing Telepractice designed for nurses currently working in acute care or community settings. It includes courses on informatics, assessment and communication, telepractice ethics and legalities, and a telehealth practicum.

Confederation College

Confederation College offers e-learning courses on Leadership and Decision Making, Leadership and Communication, Ethical Decisions in Leadership, Developing Leadership Capacity and Creating a Corporate Service Culture.

Fanshawe College

Fanshawe College offers several leadership courses via distance education.

Fleming College

Fleming College is offering a new nephrology nursing program.

Georgian College

Georgian College offers an RN Nephrology program completely on-line.

Humber College

Humber College offers Nephrology Nursing 101 on-line as well as Teaching Principles for Health Professionals. Humber, in partnership with Ontario Learn, also offers the Manufacturing Leadership Certificate Program as a fully online (web-based)program. A partnering college will deliver the courses that are mandatory for this program via the Internet .Courses include: Personal Computing, Introduction Supervisory Skills, Coaching and Developing People, and Developing Effective Teams.

Mohawk College

Mohawk College offers a Nephrology Nursing Certificate Program.

Sheridan College

Sheridan College offers Personal & Professional Development for Women workshops.
