STOP Med-HD: Safely deprescribing medications for people on hemodialysis

Hemodialysis patients have a very high pill burden (averaging 12 medications a day) and research suggests many of these medications may not be necessary, potentially leading to unnecessary hospitalizations and adverse drug reactions.

To help reduce this burden, Canadian researchers have developed a new tool to help care teams identify and reduce unnecessary medications being taken by hemodialysis patients.

Join us on World Kidney Day to learn more about the STOP Med-HD project and how this new tool is being used at sites across Canada.

You will also learn about the Can-SOLVE CKD Network, a national research organization working to improve kidney health in partnership with patients.

Presenters:

Dr. Marisa Battistella

Marisa Battistella is a pharmacy clinician scientist specializing in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The objective of her research program focuses on translational studies that address unmet clinical needs across the entire spectrum of pharmacotherapy care in the CKD patient, from pre-prescribing (using genomics to guide the selection of drugs) to deprescribing (tapering, stopping, discontinuing or withdrawing drugs), with the goal of managing polypharmacy (use of multiple medications) and improving patient outcomes.

Graham Pollock

Graham Pollock is the Communications & External Relations Lead at the Can-SOLVE CKD Network. In this role, he oversees the network’s communications portfolio, leading the development and execution of strategies to increase awareness of innovative kidney research among a wide range of audiences. Graham also leads the network’s efforts to develop and maintain strong relationships with funding partners and key external organizations.

In celebration of the World Kidney Day 2024 theme, Advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice, this webinar is being offered at no charge.
